ACVP Veterinary Pharmacy Student Competition:
Putting Their Knowledge to the Test

The field of veterinary pharmacy requires a unique combination of knowledge and expertise, blending pharmaceutical science with veterinary medicine. On March 18, the American College of Veterinary Pharmacists held a “knowledge bowl” style competition that brought together student pharmacists and veterinary students to test their knowledge, problem-solving abilities, and quick thinking under pressure.

With the event’s theme of “Recognizing and Preventing Human Over the Counter Drug Toxicities in Canines and Felines,” participants had to be prepared to answer questions on a variety of common OTC medications including pain relief, sleep aid, digestive health, allergy relief, vitamins and supplements, etc.  The competition questions were written utilizing trusted resources including professionals in the field, Plumb’s, and related textbooks.

The format of the competition consisted of 30 questions related to mechanism of action, PK, dosing, adverse effects, toxicity, indication, etc.  The questions were designed to be both challenging and practical, reflecting real-world scenarios encountered in veterinary pharmacy practice.

The benefits of participating in and attending these competitions are numerous. For participants, the competition provided an opportunity to highlight their expertise, gain recognition, and connect with others around the nation. It also serves as a platform for continuing education, as competitors were encouraged to broaden their knowledge base while preparing for the event.

This year’s event was the brainchild of ACVP Student Pharmacist Board Member Alexandra Arnett. Alex, a third-year student at Texas Tech University School of Pharmacy explains that her intent in creating the competition was for pharmacy students and veterinary students to understand common OTC uses, toxicities, and adverse effects.

Alex adds that the main goal of the event was to promote collaboration between the two professions. “The competition helps the veterinary students understand that we, as pharmacy professionals, are committed to increasing our knowledge of veterinary pharmacy topics. It also showcases ACVP as an information resource and reflects our commitment to working with all veterinary professionals.”

ACVP’s veterinary pharmacy student competition serves a valuable purpose beyond the thrill of victory. By spotlighting the importance of specialized knowledge in veterinary pharmacy, this competition promotes excellence in the field, fosters professional development, and elevates the standards of veterinary pharmaceutical care.

3rd Place: Elizabeth Clifton – Second-year veterinary student at Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine`

4th Place: Kaitlyn Cole – Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine

5th Place: Claire Kollars – UMKC (University of Missouri-Kansas City) School of Pharmacy
