Help Domestic Abuse Survivors and Their Pets with the Purina Purple Leash Project
As a veterinary pharmacy professional, you see the deep bond between people and their pets. But for survivors of domestic abuse, that bond can be a barrier to seeking help – they worry about what will happen to their beloved animals if they leave.
Domestic violence statistics show that only nineteen percent of domestic violence shelters accept pets. In addition, over 70 percent of women in domestic violence shelters report their abuser threatened, injured or killed a pet as a means of control. As a result, nearly half (48 percent) of domestic abuse survivors delay leaving because they can’t take their pets with them.
That’s where the Purina Purple Leash Project comes in. This incredible charity works to create pet-friendly domestic violence shelters, ensuring survivors never have to make the impossible choice between their own safety and their pet’s wellbeing.
And now, you can support this vital cause at the Chairperson’s Zoo Walk for Charity on Thursday, July 11, 2024 at the upcoming Veterinary Pharmacy Conference,
Your contribution to the Purple Leash Project will help:
- Renovate shelters to accommodate pets
- Provide pet food, supplies, and veterinary care for animals in the shelters
- Educate domestic violence organizations on the importance of being pet-friendly
Just imagine the relief and comfort a survivor will feel, knowing their pet is safe and cared for as they start to rebuild their life. Your donation can make that a reality.
Please join ACVP in supporting the vital work of the Purina Purple Leash Project. Let’s come together as a veterinary pharmacy community to protect both people and pets affected by domestic violence.
Can’t join us on July 11? You can still make a donation in support of the Purple Leash Project and designate in in honor or memory of a loved one.
