The American College of Apothecaries, American College of Veterinary Pharmacists, and ACA Research and Education Foundation have named Donnie Calhoun, RPh, of Anniston, Alabama as the organizations’ new Executive Vice President. Calhoun was selected to lead the pharmacy associations after a nationwide search and will begin his new role on June 1, 2016.
“We are confident that in Donnie Calhoun we have found an experienced leader for the College who is committed to strengthening community pharmacy while maintaining the ACA and ACVP’s standards for membership and quality pharmaceutical training,” said Jerry Greene, RPh, FACA, Chairman of the American College of Apothecaries Board of Directors.
“As a pharmacy owner, I’ve experienced first-hand the opportunities and challenges faced by many of our ACA and ACVP Fellows as they navigate the changing world of pharmacy in the 21st century,” said Calhoun. “I am excited and honored to be selected to lead these organizations. ACA has set the benchmark for Professional Practice in Independent Community Pharmacy since 1940 and ACVP is the industry gold standard for veterinary pharmacy. The ACA Research & Education Foundation is a leading national foundation dedicated to preserving independent community pharmacy. These organizations have a legacy of pharmacy service that I am proud to continue. I look forward to working with leadership from all three organizations to promote and develop programs for independent pharmacists that will enhance best practices and provide better patient outcomes.”
Calhoun brings over 25 years of experience in independent community pharmacy and extensive leadership experience with both state and national pharmacy associations to his new role with ACA and ACVP. Calhoun graduated from Samford University McWhorter School of Pharmacy with a BS in Pharmacy in 1987. He served on the board of the Alabama State Board of Pharmacy from 2008-2012, and served as president in 2012. He also served on the National Community Pharmacy Association board from 2004 thru 2014, serving as President from 2012-2013. Calhoun is currently the president of the NCPA Community Pharmacy Foundation Board of Directors, a position he has held since 2015. Calhoun sits on the national board of directors for Pharmacists Mutual Insurance Company and is the Executive Director of the Specialty Sterile Pharmaceutical Society.
Calhoun is an adjunct faculty member for Samford University’s McWhorter School of Pharmacy, Auburn University’s Harrison School of Pharmacy, and Campbell University School of Pharmacy. He has owned multiple independent community pharmacies over the years as well as a home medical equipment company and home infusion company. Calhoun is also currently on the board of the Alabama Care Plan, a regional care organization in Alabama serving Medicaid patients. He has served as a member and Treasurer of the National Home Infusion Association and has served on the P/T committee for Member Health, the Part D Company for CCRX.
Calhoun is a past recipient of the Alabama Pharmacy Association’s Distinguished Young Pharmacist (1991) and Pharmacist of the Year (2005). Calhoun has published numerous articles about pharmacy and has spoken at many national and international meetings.
Calhoun’s selection has the support of the leadership of the organizations. “Donnie Calhoun has the background both as pharmacy owner and as an industry leader to support independent pharmacy in its pivotal role in meeting the medical needs in our communities,” said Tom Hunt, RPh, FACA, FACVP, President of the American College of Apothecaries.
“Donnie has the experience and leadership capabilities that will benefit the American College of Veterinary Pharmacists. He understands the importance of veterinary pharmacy and how necessary this branch of pharmacy is for veterinarians to treat their patients,” said Calvin Freedman, RPh, FACVP, FACA, President of the American College of Veterinary Pharmacists
“Donnie’s knowledge in leading the NCPA Foundation will also be very valuable to us as he takes over guiding our ACA Research and Education Foundation,” said John Oftebro, RPh, FACA, President of the ACA Foundation.
